My Facebook I happened upon this long ago blog site the other day and took a 30 day walk down memory lane.
At the time I wrote about my 30 day paleo eating challenge I was till recovering from my job loss. 2012 seems like a lifetime ago, (and if you use Molly's time on earth as a life time, then it truly was.)
I have done targeted daily blogs several times over the years. Typically the standard November "Thirty Days of Thanks" and a couple of "Marching through March" attempts.
In my never ending journey of rediscovery, I am starting a "Thirty Days of Hyrox" series for this November.
Each day I will do a Hyrox workout. I will post ahead of time so you can join me if you like. I will either blog, vlog, or post about it. I will get on the socials and YouTube and chat away about it. I will cover all the details of what I am doing and why.
For those of you new to Hyrox, it is an event, put together by a handful of dudes from Europe that combines functional movement with a lot of running. A mental test that is also quite physical. Add in several well known training philosophies and a dash of CrossFit and you have Hyrox.
I will admit. I am hooked. I have competed in two events. Last year with a fabulous lady named Lizz and this year with my bestie Pam. I had a blast both times.
I am going to Paris in December to see Gracie, aaannnnd to attempt my first solo Hyrox. Unlike the doubles where you have a running buddy and then someone to split the exercises with, a solo effort provides no respite.
All you, all the time.
For those of you not in the know, here is what a Hyrox Event entails.
Three Two One Go!!!!!!!
1 km run
1km SkiErg
1km run
50m sled push
1km run
50m sled pull
1km run
80M burpee broad jumps
1km run
1km row
1km run
200m farmer's carry
1km run
100m sandbag lunges
1km run
100 wallballs
So, yeah... not for everyone, but tens of thousands of people sign up in cities worldwide to take part.
All manner of locomotion, and functional movements rolled into a massive money making machine!
I have jumped right in! I am a Level 2 certified Hyrox affiliated coach. The courses are actually quite fun and interesting. My favorite part so far is the Hyrox philosophy of putting your play list down, taking out the earbuds and leaning into self reflection and mental toughness in the silence of your own head!
(ok boomer!!)
I will continue my CrossFit based training each day, along with a Hyrox specific workout!
Today's workout is one I have done for several years as a sport of recovery day workout. I call it the carry workout and what I like about it is that it supports basic core strength in dynamic movement.
Planks are great but who uses planks in everyday life?
This workout requires you to apply core strength while walking. I add in cardio on a machine for both heartrate raising and muscle memory for the race.
5 Rounds for time (RFT)
100ft Front Rack Carry #18 Kettlebells
100ft Overhead Carry #10 dumbbells
100ft Sandbag Carry #25 sandbag (bear hug)
100ft Farmer's Carry #35 Kettlebells
10 cals hard on skierg or rower
This took me just over 20 minutes and each movement challenges your core differently. The only time I was out of breath was after the ski or row, so it is a good "recovery day" type of workout.
I have a new "warmup" that I will do each day of November as well. It is a 20 minute affair with 5 minutes on each machine (ski bike row) and a 5 minute run. While I am keeping track of how far I get in the five minutes, I do not overly push this. Itis a warmup.
So day one is in the books!
